In thinking about recovery from Credit Crisis 2008, Arnold Kling has started staying that we need to think of Economic Activity not in terms of GDP (spending) but rather PSST - "Patterns of Sustainable Specialization and Trade". (more)

Monkeypox is an infectious viral disease that can occur in humans and some other animals.[1] Symptoms include fever, swollen lymph nodes, and a rash that forms blisters and then crusts over.[1] The time from exposure to onset of symptoms ranges from five to twenty-one days.[3][5] The duration of symptoms is typically two to four weeks.[5] There may be mild symptoms, and it may occur without any symptoms being known.[3][17] The classic presentation of fever and muscle pains, followed by swollen glands, with lesions all at the same stage, has not been found to be common to all outbreaks.[1][18] Cases may be severe, especially in children, pregnant women or people with suppressed immune systems. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Monkeypox see also https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2022_monkeypox_outbreak

Zvi Mowshowitz: Covid-19 8/4/22: Rebound. Another study takes untreated Covid patients who did not get Paxlovid, and finds viral rebound and symptom rebound in 12% and 27% of participants respectively, 10% of the 27% being after all symptoms had gone away. This suggests a strong possibility that all this ‘Paxlovid rebound’ worry is more ‘this is what happens when you are looking for rebounds’ than it is ‘there are a lot of rebounds caused by this (more)

Napier Collyns was at the heart of the small group of planners, economists and forecasters at Shell (which included Pierre Wack, Ted Newland and, later, Peter Schwartz) who invented and pioneered scenario planning. Later he was part of the small group who founded the influential Global Business Network (GBN) in California. https://www.triarchypress.net/napier.html

Kevin Kelly on the Scenius concept. Brian Eno suggested the word to convey the extreme Creativity that groups, places or "scenes" can occasionally generate. His actual definition is: "Scenius stands for the intelligence and the intuition of a whole cultural scene. It is the communal form of the concept of the Genius." Social Network scale? Scenius can erupt almost anywhere, and at different scales: in a corner of a company, in a neighborhood, or in an entire region. (EcoSystem?) (more)

River Kenna: Behind-No-Scenes. LotR has great examples of one of my favorite genres of photograph: behind the scenes pictures of practical effects...their purpose isn’t to be interesting conversation fodder, their purpose is to add something to a story, to further the goals of the movie... Hanging around the parts of the internet that I do, I often get a feeling like I’m hanging around at a practical effects convention.... There is really-truly-actually magic in the air, you can see it on people’s faces and in everything they present. But… I’m not really seeing many movies being made, so to speak. (more)

It might not be the perfect strategy—and ideally, we’d work the other way around—but it is what exists now. (strategic context) (more)

Zvi Mowshowitz: Covid-19 7/28/22: Ruining It For Everyone. An old Alzheimer’s paper that it seems the entire field of drug development and diagnosis was based around, and it turned out it’s not only fraud, it’s very obvious fraud once you actually look at the manipulated images (more)

Zvi Mowshowitz: Monkeypox Post #2. Will we turn the tide soon? It briefly looked like this might have already happened, but it turned out not to be the case. I give us a reasonable chance to indeed turn the tide relatively soon, and without a broad spillover into the non-MSM community. There will of course be some cases of spread elsewhere, but my (not too confident) hunch is that the disease won’t robustly spread in most other places, and will remain mostly within MSM. (more)

Evrone: JSON Creator Douglas Crockford Interview. You participated in the “E” programming language development in 1997: Dean Tribble was developing an amazing language called Joule. Doug Barnes figured out a way to plop the best ideas of Joule onto Java, which we called E. Martin Odersky developed the first E compiler. Mark Miller redesigned E, eliminating many of the bad parts of Java. The goal of these languages was to support the development of secure, distributed systems. (E Lang) (more)

Digital therapeutics, a subset of digital health (e-health), is a health discipline and treatment option that utilizes a digital and often online health technologies to treat a medical or psychological (mental health) condition.[1][2][3][4] The treatment relies on behavioral and lifestyle changes usually spurred by a collection of digital impetuses.[5][6] Because of the digital nature of the methodology, data can be collected and analyzed as both a progress report and a preventative measure.[7][8][9][10][11][12] Treatments are being developed for the prevention and management of a wide variety of diseases and conditions, including type II diabetes, congestive heart failure, obesity, Alzheimer's disease, dementia, asthma, substance abuse, ADD/ADHD, anxiety, depression, and several others.[1][13][14][15] Digital therapeutics often employ strategies rooted in cognitive behavioral therapy. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Digital_therapeutics (more)
